Our view
The Captain Air offers the most important Captain Pro features — True Distance, AI club recommendations, Find My Rangefinder, GPS distances — for £50 less. The honest question is whether the £50 saving is worth the step down from OLED to LCD and 7x to 6x magnification. For most golfers the answer is probably no — the display difference is immediately noticeable and the Captain Pro at £299 is already strong value. That said, at £249 with 1-year free analytics the Captain Air is a compelling entry into connected golf. Note that the product is currently available for pre-order — check availability before purchasing.
Pros
- Same True Distance and AI club recommendations as the Captain Pro for £50 less
- IP65 is still genuinely weatherproof — handles heavy rain without issue
- Find My Rangefinder and GPS front/centre/back at £249 is strong value
- 1-year free analytics worth £49.99 adds immediate value
- USB-C rechargeable — no CR2 costs
- Dual-colour Red/Black display for variable light conditions
Cons
- LCD not OLED — display noticeably less sharp than the Captain Pro
- 6x not 7x magnification
- IP65 not IP67 — less protection than Captain Pro though still very capable
- 1,000 yard range vs 1,200 on Captain Pro
- Currently pre-order only — not yet shipping
- App dependency for full connected features
